After 10 years on Steam, Korean MMO ArcheAge is giving up on North America and Europe

A study about what might happen at the end of the world based on player behaviour in the Korean MMO ArcheAge is about to be put to the test. After a nearly 10-year run on Steam, ArcheAge servers in North America and Europe will be closed in June.

"After discussing the performance of ArcheAge with XL Games at length, we have concluded that we’re no longer able to provide the MMORPG we envisioned," publisher Kakao Games wrote in a closure announcement. "The declining number of active players means the game’s content is no longer accessible in the way it used to be, and the experience of it is different from what was originally intended. In light of this, we’ve made the difficult decision to terminate the live service of ArcheAge in Europe and North America.

"We understand this news is disappointing, for it’s a feeling we share. ArcheAge has been a big part of our lives, and we know many of you have a history with the game many times longer than ours. As we approach the end of this journey, we invite you to join us as we ride into the sunset."

There is still some life left in ArcheAge though: The announcement doesn't make any references to specific regions outside of North America and Europe, meaning that the East Asian servers should still be fair game. While Kakao Games does note that ArcheAge publishers in other regions have "implemented IP blocks based on their respective licensing agreements," It still sounds like you should be able to make an account in another region if you need your ArcheAge fix that badly.

"If you eventually find yourself part of a different publisher’s Territory of Service, you are more than welcome to play," the FAQ states. "Keep in mind that your EUNA in-game data will not be available in other regions, and you will have to start with a fresh account."

ArcheAge player numbers have been in the doldrums for years. Following a peak of about 6,500 players on Steam in 2014, the player count tailed off dramatically: Since mid-2020 the concurrent player count has generally hovered a little over 100, which is neither sustainable nor much fun for an MMO. A merge of ArcheAge and the ArcheAge: Unchained spinoff, which is essentially the same game with a different monetization model, took place in November 2023 and barely moved the dial: Following the merge, the concurrent player count briefly climbed into the low 200s.

For players impacted by the looming shutdown, the plan is to go out in style. The sale of credits has now been halted but the in-game marketplace will remain available until the end, and players with remaining Patron time and Tactful Life buff time will have it automatically exchanged for credits so they can do something with it. Developer XL Games is also planning "equipment giveaway" and "progress support" events, saying, "We hope to make great memories in ArcheAge during the rest of the service."

Fallout 4's big next-gen patch isn't going over well, especially on PC: "I had very low expectations but this is MUCH less than I expected"

Two-and-a-half years after it was first announced, the big next-gen patch for Fallout 4 is finally here - and a lot smaller than fans were hoping for.

The full patch notes for the update were posted to Steam alongside the update's release today, and aside from the previously detailed new content, there were, uh, 17 bug fixes. On consoles, of course, players are finally able to enjoy robust graphical options including 60 FPS support, but on PC, the list of changes is looking pretty thin aside from the new Creation Club items.

"Damn, the bugfix list is SHORT," as one Reddit user puts it. "I had very low expectations but this is MUCH less than I expected. They didn't fix almost any of the bugs that annoyed me the most (VATS crash and perception bug in Survival, for example)." You can go read that whole thread if you want to see the thoughts of upset Fallout fans, but that particular quote politely sets the tone.

The thing drawing the most criticism, however, is the update's promised ultrawide support. Sure enough, there's now official support for wider aspect ratios, but it stretches out the UI and there's no FOV slider for you to adjust your view. And, while console players are getting a big FPS boost, there's some lingering frustration from PC players that the game still doesn't support anything beyond 60 FPS.

It's certainly a disappointing debut for a patch that was first announced way back in October 2022, especially when the whole series is surging in popularity thanks to the Fallout TV show. Of course, the real joy of Fallout is the mods, which can offer TV show nods, graphical boosts, bug fixes, and more content. Just, uh, don't be surprised if you have some trouble actually downloading those mods with all the traffic right now.

Looking for a definitive ranking of the best Fallout games? Ours is unimpeachable.

Daisy Ridley Says "Nothing Can Prepare You" For How Star Wars Changes Your Life

Nearly nine years ago, Daisy Ridley made her first appearance as Rey in Star Wars: The Force Awakens before reprising her role in the two sequels that followed. More recently, Ridley signed on to return as Rey in another sequel that will begin a new era for the Jedi. That film will inevitably feature new cast members who will undergo the same life-changing events that Ridley went through she joined the franchise. During a recent interview with Empire, Ridley reflected on how being cast as Rey changed the trajectory of her life.

"There was a lot of love and protection," said Ridley. "I can’t really remember that well — it was ten years ago. There was a lot of support given, but nothing can really prepare you for what you’re going to go through on an individual level."

"I think when everything actually happened, I stayed at home and sort of was like, 'Okay!' There’s a craziness, and then everything goes away again, which is great," added Ridley. "For all the people going, 'Your life is going to change,' it did in some ways, and then you just go to your mum's house and you're like, 'Okay, this is nice.' Having such a solid foundation was the absolute best thing for me. Obviously, on a professional scale, things changed, and [in terms of ] anonymity, things change, but only actually really briefly. There were a lot of changes, but also many things stayed the same."

A former athletic director of a Baltimore high school has been arrested and charged with using an AI voice cloning service to frame the school’s principal.

The Baltimore Banner reports that Baltimore police believe a purported recording of Pikesville High School principal Eric Eiswert making racist and antisemitic comments was faked. Experts told The Baltimore Banner and Baltimore police that the recording, which circulated through social media in January and briefly resulted in Eiswert’s suspension, has a “flat tone, unusually clean background sounds, and lack of consistent breathing sounds or pauses.”

Baltimore police traced the recording to Dazhon Darien, a former athletic director at the school whose name was also mentioned in the...
