30 years ago, 12 Monkeys warned us about global pandemics and information overload

We haven’t quite caught up with the future of 12 Monkeys just yet. The Terry Gilliam-directed movie extends as far as around 2035, 40 years after its Dec. 29, 1995 release, and still another decade off from this, its 30th anniversary. But maybe we’ll catch up soon. In 12 Monkeys, a virus is strategically released in 1996 and quickly wipes out much of the world’s population. Survivors are forced underground, sending imprisoned “volunteers” to the uninhabited surface to collect samples. Our closest equivalent is the COVID-19 pandemic that began in 2020 and has since been mitigated but not exactly beaten. Given the speed of its spread, the next one probably still has time.

Bethesda's Todd Howard says "we are doing other things with Fallout that we haven’t announced, and there’ll come a time for that"

Despite it being over 10 years since the last proper entry in the series, with Fallout 5 nowhere in sight, Bethesda boss Todd Howard says unannounced Fallout things are in the works.

As good as Bethesda's games are, it's best not to get too attached to the thought of a sequel. Given that the studio seemingly works on one game at a time and is currently the shepherd of three massive franchises with Elder Scrolls, Fallout, and Starfield, you're bound to be waiting a long time. And given the immense popularity of the Fallout TV series, the lack of new entries to really take advantage of it has been felt in recent years.

And while it feels like we won't see a proper Fallout 5 for a long time, speaking to GameInformer, Howard says, "Fallout as a franchise is the one that we’re still doing the most work in above anything." While this undoubtedly includes work on the TV series, Howard hints that gaming projects are in the works too: "Now, the majority of our internal team is on Elder Scrolls VI. We are doing other things with Fallout that we haven’t announced, and there’ll come a time for that."

Howard also notes that with the divisive Fallout 76, "we’ve never stopped developing Fallout; we’ve had a full team on it for a long time." But it's clear that a majority of the fanbase want a new single-player adventure akin to the main series.

Given the one-two punch of Baldur's Gate 3 blowing up and the TV series being massive, I'd love to see a new team take a crack at the D&D-inspired CRPG style found in the original pre-Bethesda Fallout games, but I can't say I'm too confident in seeing any major release for a while.

Bethesda design director wants a Fallout 5 you could play for 600 hours because "that's the kind of games we make"

Metaphor: ReFantazio devs don't want to "quickly put out" a sequel in response to the JRPG's success: "We want to really give it some thought"

Metaphor: ReFantazio was a critical hit, an awards magnet, and one of publisher Atlus' fastest-selling games. So, uh, surely a sequel would be a no-brainer, right? Frequent Persona and Metaphor director Katsura Hashino has now said that he doesn't want to rush into making a follow-up based solely on the first game's success, though. Whatever comes next for Metaphor has to "be worthwhile for the fans."

"When we initially set out to create this game, we had the ambitions of hoping to cultivate this game into one of our brands within Atlus, like a pillar," Hashino told Game Informer, explaining how he wanted Metaphor: ReFantazio to join the likes of Shin Megami Tensei and Persona within the company.

"With that being said, just because we had a certain level of success, we don’t want to just jump on that and quickly put out something as a sequel. We want to really give it some thought and make sure that if we are able to continue on in this series, we’re putting together something that is building on the values that we were able to infuse into this game, and something that would be worthwhile for the fans that would be waiting for it," he added.

For now, the developers need to be "able to confirm that we're going in the right direction" before building the brand up further. "Because of that, we're looking ahead into what we can do with this series, but we won't want to just act on it because we had a certain level of success, if that makes sense."

Elsewhere, the Persona 5 lead also said he's not been "super involved" with the franchise after the last mainline game, even though he's still physically attached to the team behind it.

As the wait for Persona 6 continues, developers tease "opportunities in 2026 to talk about future developments" for the JRPG's 30th anniversary
