First look released of Adam Driver in The Godfather director’s new sci-fi epic that’s been in the making for 23 years

Following an intriguing teaser, the first proper look at Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis has been released. Adam Driver and Nathalie Emmanuel star in the intriguing first image, set against the backdrop of a retro-futuristic New York City.

In the upcoming movie from The Godfather director, which is described as a sci-fi saga inspired by Roman epics, Star Wars actor Driver plays an idealistic architect named Caesar who hopes to rebuild the once great city. Meanwhile, Game of Thrones actor Emmanuel is Julia Cicero, the socialite daughter of a corrupt mayor (played by Giancarlo Esposito), and Driver’s character’s nemesis.

The synopsis of the film teases that Emmanuel’s character is caught between the two men amid her search for life’s meaning. Vanity Fair shared the first image, which you can see below.

The sprawling cast also stars Aubrey Plaza, Shia LaBeouf, Dustin Hoffman, Jon Voight, Laurence Fishburne, and Jason Schwartzman. In a statement accompanying the first look, Coppola shared that he’s been working on the film for 23 years (not the 40 that’s often reported) and it’s heavily inspired by ancient Rome.

"Ultimately, after a lot of time, I settled on the idea of a Roman epic," Apocalypse Now director Coppola says. "And then later, a Roman epic set in modern America, so I really only began writing this script, on and off, in the last dozen years or so. Also, as I have made many films of many different subjects and in many different styles, I hoped for a project later in life when I might better understand what my personal style was."

Early leaked reactions to the film from an industry screening have been divisive. One viewer shared that it was "unflinching in how batshit it is" while another said the ending is "baffling". It will debut at the Cannes Film Festival in a few weeks when the first official reviews will be released ahead of its expected release later this year.

For more upcoming movies, here's our guide to 2024 movie release dates.

Yes, Stellar Blade's Eve sees you staring at her, just like Nier Automata's 2B and Death Stranding's Sam knew what was happening

Stellar Blade's Eve will stare the player down if they're ogling her for too long.

Surprise: People are down bad for Stellar Blade's protagonist. As players have discovered to their shock, though, it turns out protagonist Eve will have a bit of a staring competition if the player in question gets a little too thirsty and starts ogling the character with the camera.

In the brief clip below, for example, Eve turns and stares directly into the camera that's been left hovering over them for just long enough to be uncomfortable. It sort of feels like the character is staring directly into the player's soul here, which may or may not be what developer Shift Up had intended.

Eve catches you staring at her from r/stellarblade

There's a better look at the feature in the clip just below. One player fancies getting an angle on Eve from below, and the protagonist knows exactly what they're up to, staring them down with the energy of a school teacher demanding to know what the idiot pupil thinks they're doing.

I'll admit, this caught me off guard from r/stellarblade

This continues a pretty funny stunt from Death Stranding, of all things. Back in the 2019 action game, if you focused the camera on Norman Reedus's crotch in his private room, he'd uncomfortably cover his area with his hands. Understandably, he'd then actually punch the camera if you continued hovering.

Somewhat more predictably, Nier Automata had a feature like this two years prior in 2017. As the clip below proves, if you hold the camera in a position where you can see up protagonist 2B's skirt, the android will move away and look back at the player camera in disgust. Again, fair play to her, and a punch in this situation would've been more than justified.

Bizarrely, there was even a PlayStation Trophy attached to this feature in Nier Automata. Called 'What Are You Doing?' the Trophy required you to look up 2B's skirt a grand total of 10 times. Oddly, the Trophy's description required you to discover 2B's "secret" 10 times, which makes the entire thing feel a hell of a lot filthier than any of the other examples here.

Stellar Blade keeps fixing things that bothered me when I reviewed it – now including "input time for basic attacks, as well as the timing of blocking and parrying."

Rise of the Ronin Sales are “Surpassing” the Nioh Series, Says Koei Tecmo

Team Ninja’s Rise of the Ronin launched with generally favorable reviews last month, though some were less positive than others (check out ours here). Nevertheless, in its financial results for the fiscal year ending March 2024, Koei Tecmo reports that sales are surpassing its Nioh series.

The open-world action RPG also has a “high valuation” by players and is considered a “significant step towards mid to long-term growth.” Though it didn’t provide any sales figures, it noted elsewhere in the report that the sales start “goes beyond the Nioh series (Nioh and Nioh 2).”

It’s worth noting that Nioh sold over one million units worldwide within 17 days of its launch, while Nioh 2 crossed the same milestone roughly two months after launch. The franchise as a whole shipped over seven million units as of October 2022.

Of course, both Nioh titles launched as exclusives for the PS4, while Rise of the Ronin is exclusive to the PS5. The latter has a higher price point, which could mean higher overall dollar sales. Stay tuned for more details regarding its sales numbers in the coming months.
