Crimson Desert's 2.0 update's most surprising change is an effort to make Kliff a fully realised character with thoughts and opinions

Crimson Desert didn't get its jaws into me as deep as I'd hoped—partially because of its somewhat scattershot, overwhelming nature. This is purely a matter of personal taste, mind. If I weren't obligated to keep up with new games, my MMOs of choice, and y'know, social obligations, I probably would've gotten arm-deep within Pearl Abyss' systems-driven buffet.

I do have to give its developer credit, though. Crimson Desert has been utterly flooded with free updates without any sign of actually stopping. The latest in this long line is the "Crimson Desert Enhanced" patch, which is live now on PC and was announced during Gamescom 2026 opening night live.

In terms of nitty-gritty gameplay changes, it'll now be easier to get skill points for all three of the main cast, rather than having to ration out your Abyss Artefacts across all of 'em. There's also eight new skills for main man Kliff himself, UI tweaks, and bug fixes.

But the premier feature of this patch is a re-tuning of the game's main story—it's unclear how deep this goes, but doing some digging and watching playthroughs (such as this helpful primer by YouTube channel GamingBolt) shows Kliff's first foray into the abyss accompanied by a mournful reflection on his history with his Greymane companions. Meaningful story—or lack thereof—was a major complaint on launch for Crimson Desert, so it's nice to see Pearl Abyss trying to turn Kliff into more than a gruff yes man.

He's no longer completely lacking in introspection, either. In the same video, we join Kliff several months later not nattering to some random jobber, but actually thinking about the crazy magical events that have led him to this point. Character development? Could it be?

I'm yet to invent time travel, so I haven't had 60 spare hours to chew through the opening questlines of Crimson Desert's revamped story to tell you whether it does a good job or not, but I'm honestly charmed by the effort, anyway.

I legitimately think Pearl Abyss could've simply gotten away with allowing the game's storyline to take a backseat, but recognising and addressing that major complaint—the scattershot, absurd nature of the game's opening hours—is a valiant task to take on.

Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy Feels More Like a Tomb Raider Game

There is nary a single rat in Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy, a new installment that acts as a prequel to the 14th-century series. While it carries the Plague Tale name, so much of the design ethos that makes up the experience bears little resemblance to anything in either Innocence or Requiem. Resonance experiments with new modes of gameplay and narrative to varying success. A pivot towards bland action combat threatens to lose much of what set past Plague Tale games apart in an often homogeneous landscape. Yet even when it stumbles (and it so often does), Resonance resonates thanks to a well-performed narrative that anchors everything. It is a game I can easily recommend as a cinematic journey filled with swashbuckling spectacle; I just don't know if it’s a good Plague Tale game.

Following Xbox Breakup, State Of Decay 3 Will Return With A Closed Beta Playtest

While Microsoft reportedly sold developer Undead Labs to a mystery buyer, the Washington-based studio is keeping its zombie survival game State of Decay 3 alive and well. And now, it plans to host another playtest sometime later this year.

In an August 26 Xbox Wire post, Undead Labs' community manager, Bruce Dugan, announced that the upcoming zombie survival sim will begin a closed beta playtest "before the end of 2026." An exact date for when this beta will start wasn't confirmed, but you can register for it now.

In the post, Undead Labs' creative director, Kevin Patzelt, said that the closed beta will open to "more players over time."

"This is our largest map ever, and with untethered multiplayer, we really need to take the opportunities to stress-test and fine-tune [this experience]," Patzelt said. "If you don't get access right away, rest assured there will be more opportunities throughout the year for players familiar and brand new to the series."

This closed beta, whenever it begins, comes after Undead Labs hosted an alpha test back in May. That alpha came with four-player co-op, new base-building and resource strategies, and plenty of combat. This beta will lean on what Undead Labs learned from the alpha, with Dugan highlighting key takeaways like "engaging combat against multiple freaks, the improvements to the world’s lighting, SFX, weather and overall visuals, cosmetic changes like varied clothing options and additions of glasses and beards, and smoother and more reactive character movement."

All of this comes just a couple of months after Microsoft began breaking up with a handful of the developers it acquired as part of its massive "reset" that saw several studios get sold, tons of employees get laid off, and some games get canceled. While many weren't spared, some were able to save themselves (like Compulsion Games and Double Fine Productions) or were bought up by someone--or something--else, like Undead Labs and Hellblade developer Ninja Theory.

Announced in 2020, State of Decay 3 is the third entry in the long-running zombie survival franchise. Though no date has been nailed down just yet, the game is currently slated for a 2027 release on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.

GTA 6 Leaks Keep Spilling In Defiance of Rockstar's 'Heartbreaking' Response

On Wednesday morning, Rockstar Games finally broke the silence on the ongoing Grand Theft Auto 6 leaks at the hands of a hacking group called Cyberleek. The developer called the situation "heartbreaking" and said the unauthorized, unpolished clips were not how the studio intended the world to learn about GTA 6. Merely an hour after Rockstar addressed fans, and a day ahead of Netflix's extended reveal, Cyberleek has shared yet another video of GTA 6.
