Helldivers 2 is officially the fastest-selling PlayStation game ever made

A Helldivers 2 player kneeled down, posing in front of a teammate who is shooting a bug.

Everyone already knows Helldivers 2 has been a smash success for publisher Sony, but there were never any hard sales figures for it. Now, Sony itself has confirmed the game has pushed over 12 million units across PlayStation 5 and PC, making it the fastest-selling PlayStation launch of all time.

Sony shared this during a webcast to discuss its financial results for the company's fiscal year ending in March 2024 (via VGC). It described Helldivers 2's sales as "far exceeding expectations," having sold 12 million units in its first 12 weeks. That means, on average, it was selling a million copies every week since its February 8 launch.

This is extra impressive when you remember Spider-Man 2, the big-budget PS5 exclusive starring one of the most popular superheroes in the world, only passed the 10 million sales mark this February, four months after its launch. Not only that, but the previous record holder for fastest-selling PlayStation game was God of War Ragnarök, which sold 11 million copies in 10 weeks.

While Helldivers 2's success was obvious even without exact figures (it was the UK's best-selling game two months in a row), it's nice to actually put a number to it. As for how it achieved such a record, there's no doubt multiple contributing factors. For starters, it launching on PS5 and PC the same day would have helped simply because it allowed more people to play it than if it had been PS5 only. Not to mention it quickly fostered a dedicated community of players and a strong social media presence, which combined would've helped to attract new players who otherwise may have missed out on it.

Furthermore, Helldivers 2 is simply much cheaper than the likes of Spider-Man 2 and God of War Ragnarök. Whereas those games were sold at $70 / £70, Helldivers 2 is a far more affordable $40 / £35. Plus, Helldivers 2 is enjoying continuous updates whilst Spider-Man 2 and God of War Ragnarök are one and done single-player adventures. $40 for a game that's frequently adding new content is arguably far more enticing than a $70 game you can complete from start to finish in a month or two.

Sony will most likely want to keep supporting Helldivers 2 in the long-term, though it's already demonstrated that it's quite easy to kneecap the game's popularity. The decision to force everyone to get a PlayStation account for the game, which would've resulted in it becoming unplayable in multiple countries, almost felt like the end-times for Helldivers 2 and would've culled its playerbase had Sony not pulled a U-turn. Going forward, Sony may be more careful with how it handles Helldivers 2. After all, it's a golden goose for the company right now and the last thing it will want to do is squander it.

Hades 2 will change your "dash" and "sprint" abilities in its first patch

Greek god pulverizing simulator Hades 2 is getting its first patch "later this month", say the developers. Two things are on their to-tweak list. First, something might change about the way resource gathering tools are used (the pickaxe you use to mine silver during a run, for example). Second, and perhaps more significant, is an upcoming change to the way Melinoë's dash and sprint work. We don't know exactly what that change is but, according to Supergiant, it has something to do with your witchy batterer's "distinct style".

Adam Driver and Aubrey Plaza star in surreal trailer for new sci-fi epic Megalopolis, as The Godfather director calls it his "best work"

The first major trailer for Megalopolis is here, and it’s our best look yet at The Godfather director’s new sci-fi. Debuting ahead of its premiere at Cannes Film Festival, Francis Ford Coppola shared the trailer with a caption calling it "the best work I've ever had the privilege to preside over".

The short clip opens with Laurence Fishburne’s Fundi Romaine driving around a decaying city as he says, "When does an empire die? Does it collapse in one terrible moment? No, no, but there comes a time when its people no longer believe in it." Visually arresting, the neon-filled teaser also features new looks at Adam Driver as Cesar Catilina and Nathalie Emmanuel as Julia Cicero after the first look was released earlier this year.

Elsewhere in the surreal trailer, there are moving statues, a very heavy Roman influence, and our first major look at Aubrey Plaza’s character Wow Platinum – yes, that's really her name. Also starring in the movie, which has been in the making for more than 23 years, are Giancarlo Esposito, Shia LaBeouf, Dustin Hoffman, and Jon Voight.

The film is set in a destroyed New York City-like metropolis, which Driver’s Cesar is trying to rebuild. As an architect with the ability to stop time, he hopes to make it into a sustainable utopia but faces opposition from Esposito’s Cicero. Stuck between the two men is Cicero’s daughter Julia (Emmanuel) who is in love with Cesar.

Megalopolis is due to make its debut at the Cannes Film Festival on May 16, ahead of its release late this year. It’s already had some divisive first reactions too, which have hailed it as everything from a "masterpiece" to "batshit crazy".

For what else is out this year, here’s our guide to all the upcoming movies and 2024 movie release dates to add to your calendar.

The first patch for Bethesda's busted Fallout 4 next gen update leaves its biggest problems intact, and you're still better off downgrading the game

Fallout 4's 14.4GB "next gen" update dropped at the end of April, dovetailing neatly with the very popular Fallout TV show on Amazon. It promised all sorts of bells and whistles to bring the (nearly decade old, my god) game up to date to the standards we expect from videogames in 2024.

And then, forgive me, it bombed. Hard. Very little visibly changed, mods went haywire, and the changes that were noticeable were mostly the parts of the game the patch broke. But fear not, because Bethesda has now put out Next Gen Update 2, featuring "fixes and improvements to address some of the feedback you provided us with on the previous update."

But, well, that's about all the good news I have for you. For the most part, the community has responded to the patch with an emphatic shrug: Most of the problems that were introduced by the first next-gen patch are still hanging around, with only relatively minor tweaks and changes for those of us playing on PC (tellingly, a hefty chunk of the patch notes specify they only apply to consoles).

"They only really fixed HDR (more or less), a few visual issues related to the performance options and the Creation Club stuff they added last update," writes Reddit user diegodamohill, "That's it, that's this update in a nutshell. VATS is still broken, ultrawide is still broken, no fixes to a lot of day 1 issues, etc."

Ever since Bethesda released the next-gen patch, ultrawide players have had to reckon with an absurdly stretched UI that I can only describe as 'Big Chungus-esque'. Despite promising ultrawide support, the next-gen patch didn't deliver a UI that could comfortably accommodate those of us with ultrawide screens. It looks quite awful, and is a regular source of complaints about the patch.

It, along with several other bugs, hasn't been fixed. Nor do there seem to be many new fixes for the game's new bugs, glitches, or (perhaps worst of all) the weapon debris crashes that have plagued the game ever since RTX GPUs became a thing.

So no wonder that many disgruntled players still recommend using the Fallout 4 Downgrader tool instead of accepting this patch: Rolling the game back to its functional, pre-"next gen" state. I suppose we can take some comfort in that: Even when everything is going awry, you can still rely on modders to fix Bethesda games.
