We Finally Know Xal’atath’s Evil Plan For The World Of Warcraft

After years of theories and speculation, World of Warcraft players may have finally uncovered the real endgame of its current main villain, Xal'atath.

Xal'atath has been Azeroth's big bad for the past several expansions, but aside from amassing power in her Dark Heart artifact, her exact motivations haven't been entirely clear. She doesn't seem to work for the Old Gods but for herself, though to what end has been up for debate.

Now, a datamined bit of dialogue from the game's upcoming 12.1 update may have just revealed her ultimate goal: one that will almost certainly spell doom for Azeroth and perhaps even the entire Warcraft universe.

Potential spoilers for patch 12.1 and future updates below.

As spotted by Reddit user rapunzel1213, a datamined (and likely subject-to-change) script from the game's 12.1 public-test realm looks to have revealed Xal'atath's true goal, and it's not to corrupt or destroy Azeroth. No, it's to become Azeroth herself.

https://www.reddit.com/r/wow/comments/1v1pyas/spoilers_datamined_igc_scripts_show_xalataths/

For a little context, the last few expansions have built up the idea that within the planet Azeroth is a slumbering Worldsoul, essentially an unborn cosmic entity called a Titan. Azeroth, however, is not just any Worldsoul, but the Prime Worldsoul. It's for that reason Azeroth seems to be in many ways the center of the Warcraft universe. The Titans sought to protect Azeroth's Worldsoul, the Burning Legion sought to destroy it, and the Void aimed to corrupt it, knowing it would be the most powerful being in the universe were it to ever awaken.

Xal'atath, it seems, is looking to become the ultimate power in the universe by somehow merging with Azeroth's Worldsoul. The datamined script looks to be part of patch 12.1's Epilogue, setting up the events of patch 12.2. In it, Arator and Orweyna arrive to deliver an urgent message to Blood Elf leaders Lor'themar and Liadrin.

"Xal'atath has reached the Worldsoul," Arator says. "We have to move now. We have to find a way down there, blast open the coreway, anything."

Liadrin asks if they don't make it in time if Xal'atath will consume Azeroth.

"No," Orweyna replies. "Xal'atath will become her."

Other datamined information, like a new Renown faction called the Radiant Core, does indicate players will indeed be heading to the Worldsoul chamber as patch of 12.2. Content creators like Bellular have done a great job putting all the pieces together, if you want more context.

Plus, there's the whole fact that Blizzard is calling this current expansion trilogy (of which Midnight is the second act) the "Worldsoul Saga." It would certainly be weird if players didn't confront the Worldsoul-sized elephant in the room at some point during this expansion.

If Xal'atath does become Azeroth, that certainly raises some questions about the game's next expansion, The Last Titan. Is Xal'atath the titular last Titan? Or will players defeat her, cleansing Azeroth of her influence and ushering in a new age? Players will have to wait to find out, but it's clear WoW's narrative stakes have never been higher, and fans are eager to see how it will all play out.

As players ponder Xal'atath's endgame, many are still trying to wrap their heads around WoW's latest lore reveal involving the Haranir. And for those wondering what's next for the Warcraft franchise, an alleged leak may have revealed new games and shows set in Blizzard's fantasy universe.

A modder has brought No Man's Sky-style seamless takeoffs to Starfield, and even in beta they look pretty great

One of Starfield's big problems is the fact that its core fantasy runs contrary to the tech it's built on. Bethesda's space-RPG is meant to evoke the majesty and scale of the cosmos. It's about exploration, curiosity, and wonder.

And yet, it exists in an engine that necessitates a whole lot of loading screens, and so the final frontier feels like a series of small rooms. In particular, the game's takeoff and landing sequences drew criticism for shoving in loading screens where games like No Man's Sky had seamless transitions.

Well, no more! Sort of! A modder named 0xBobby is hard at work to rid Starfield's takeoff sequences of the loading screen scourge. Seamless Planet Takeoffs is a mod for Starfield that makes departing its planets an at least somewhat immersive experience. Rather than cutting to a third-person view of your ship as it jets away to load-land, you remain in the cockpit, watching the planet's atmosphere give way to the void as you ascend.

It's not perfect, which is probably why it's in beta. It's not removing the loads so much as it is masking them, which means that you can still kind of identify the point at which the game shunts you from one cell to another. 0xBobby writes that "The seamlessness of the transition will depend on the atmosphere and weather of the planet," and that they're "working on making the transition even smoother." Still, even in its current state it's much better than the default experience.

Alas, your landings aren't going to be seamless. Not now, maybe not ever. "It probably won't ever happen, at least not from me," says 0xBobby. "Yes, I know of all of the tricks I could use, hiding the loading through clouds or entry flames etc, but even that would be way more complex than what this mod or seamless grav jumps do." I guess landings are just too heavy a load to carry.

Sorry.

The Blood of Dawnwalker Save Data Can Be Carried Over Into Future Titles, Confirms Director

Even with more than two million wishlists, the success of Rebel Wolves’ The Blood of Dawnwalker remains up in the air. That hasn’t stopped the team from preparing for the future, as a trailer at Summer Game Fest showcased Coen in present times, ordering blood like it’s takeout.

Interestingly, director Konrad Tomaszkiewicz revealed that the scene is actually in the post-credits for its upcoming title. Furthermore, he (alongside Bandai Namco) confirmed to Eurogamer that progress will carry over into any future sequels.

“From the beginning, when we talked about The Blood of Dawnwalker, we talked about the whole cycle, because we planned a few games and we wanted to tell the particular story we thought about. When you know what you want to say in the next games and where they lead, it’s easier to plan the story for [the first] game and to put some events and story elements in which will be the hooks for the next things which will happen,” said Tomaszkiewicz.

“If you are not thinking about it, then later you have a problem because you start the next game, you have some ideas for the story, and you start to think, ‘Okay, I will move the saves for the players and what kind of decisions I should predict, and how should it be connected? And how to make it smooth and organic?’ And so on. We prefer to do it this way.”

Which is pretty good foresight, especially if Rebel Wolves will be invested in the franchise long-term. But while that post-credits scene for The Blood of Dawnwalker is set in the modern day, it doesn’t mean that the sequel will follow suit, says Tomaszkiewicz.

“This is really important for many reasons. There’s more fun in telling different stories from many places on Earth, because we need to learn those cultures, we need to learn those legends, we need to think how to fit into these historical events, which are in that particular place.

“This will be a refreshment for us in every next part of the game, because we have this challenge in front of us, of doing something really fresh, something really cool. And at the same time, we know that we are doing a consistent story and we know where it’s leading.”

It certainly creates some intrigue, making you wonder how Coen eventually ends up in the present day. Before that, we’ll need to see if he can resolve the crisis that Brencis (who isn’t your traditional villain) has imposed on Vale Sangora, and save his family in time. Or not – after all, players can do whatever they want in the 30-day time limit, though as with everything else, there will be consequences.

The Blood of Dawnwalker launches on September 3rd for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC. Rebel Wolves also recently confirmed other fantasy beings like Pixies, Kobolds, and more alongside the possibility of other Dawnwalkers. There won’t be any mini-games, which is a bummer for fans of Gwent, but at least it won’t feature Denuvo.

Jimothy, a particularly round raccoon and the internet's latest sensation, has now broken into games

Yesterday I learnt about Jimothy, an adorably round raccoon (possibly with a spine condition) scuttling around Seattle that's gone viral thanks to his unique appearance. It was only a matter of time then before all the brand accounts joined in on the raccoon's newfound celebrity status. He's already crossing over with a bunch of your favourite games.

I first saw World of Warcraft share a picture of what lil' Jimothy would look like in the MMO and, frankly, I'd very much like him as a pet in-game. RuneScape followed up with a very similar render of Jimothy in the old school style, and Dead by Daylight gave him glowing eyes and chest, and bloody tentacles for some reason.

Mouse: P.I. For Hire tastefully drew Jimothy in its 1930s rubber hose, film noir style. Jack Pepper could have a new sidekick, and he probably likes cheese too—raccoons don't tend to be picky.

And then, at the mercy of social media's algorithms, I unfortunately saw The Sims chime in with a rather terrifying depiction of Jimothy. I'm convinced that's not an animal but a human in a creepy raccoon suit.

I'm oddly less disturbed by Halo's Spartan armour-clad Jimothy shared by senior community manager John Junyszek, which is literally a human crumpled onto all fours with elongated feet and neck.

Halo has actually double-dipped, placing Jimothy on Master Chief's crashed pod in the original Combat Evolved, and in the surrounding field in the Campaign Evolved remake.

I fear it's only a matter of time until we get a Jimothy skin in Fortnite, where the poor raccoon is awkwardly crammed into a mech suit to adhere to its hitbox requirements. But in the meantime, these crossovers are pretty sweet.
