11 anime to watch if you like Frieren

While Frieren remains singular, a handful of anime come close to capturing its laid-back atmosphere or exploring similar themes. Series like Delicious in Dungeon and The Apothecary Diaries aren’t direct analogues for Frieren, but they share its comforting spirit. Some of the following stories send their protagonists on similarly epic journeys; others linger on the warmth that develops between traveling companions. With those qualities in mind, here are 11 anime worth watching before season 3 of Frieren arrives.

Former Starfield designer says Bethesda's sci-fi RPG probably won't get a sequel, because the original wasn't 'anywhere near successful enough'

I wasn't expecting to see a Starfield sequel any time soon, given it took Bethesda eight years to make its sci-fi RPG and the studio is currently focussed on The Elder Scrolls 6. But if the words of Starfield's former systems designer are anything to go by, we may not see a sequel to Bethesda's first new IP in 25 years at all.

In an interview with FRVR (via VGC), Bethesda veteran Kurt Kuhlmann explained why he doubts the studio will ever return to Starfield: "I would be very surprised", said Kuhlmann, who left Bethesda after Starfield was released. "I don't think Starfield was anywhere near successful enough to do a Starfield 2."

While specific sales figures for Starfield haven't been released, Bethesda's sci-fi RPG is estimated to have generated $300 million in revenue as of April this year. This would make Starfield profitable based on its reported budget of $200 million, but it still has a long way to go before it reaches Skyrim levels of success. Since Xbox has reportedly expressed a desire to focus on its major franchises, it seems likely that Bethesda will prioritise The Elder Scrolls and Fallout over Starfield.

Nonetheless, Kuhlmann thinks this may represent a missed opportunity for Bethesda to build on the lessons learned creating Starfield and create something truly special: "It's in a way, too bad, because I think with the lessons learned on Starfield, a Starfield 2 could have been much closer to the game that Todd had [in mind]."

One issue Kuhlmann thinks a sequel could address is Starfield's outpost building mechanic, which Kuhlmann believes was added to Starfield somewhat arbitrarily and wasn't sufficiently baked into the core experience. "You can build a base anywhere you want on a planet. For what it is, as a standalone system, it's cool, but it's not nearly as integrated with the rest of the game," he said.

In addition, Kuhlmann pointed out that Bethesda faced a similar problem with Fallout 4, and failed to learn the lesson. "It caused problems for it to be integrated with the story and the missions and stuff in Fallout 4, so it was kind of put to the side. Which begs the question of, well, why is it still in the game?" But apparently the decision to keep the system in Starfield was "above" him. "You might say 'Well, we shouldn't have it then if we're not going to integrate it with the story, then it's just this system sitting over there with a massive amount of work involved."

Personally, I think Starfield's problems were less to do with a superfluous outpost building mechanic, and more to do with narrative and systems design that was outclassed by games like Baldur's Gate 3 and even felt dated compared to older RPGs like The Witcher 3. Yet while a full sequel for Starfield may be unlikely, Bethesda has demonstrated long-term commitment to the original game thus far. It has continued to support the base game with both free updates and DLC, while in July, the studio stated that Starfield remains "an important part of our future".

Drop everything and grab the popcorn: Majuular's 4.5-hour documentary on Ultima Online is here to devour your weekend

I'll make this quick: Whatever you had planned for the weekend, you've got to carve four-and-a-half hours out for a last-minute swerve into the late '90s. Six months in the making, YouTube essayist Majuular is back with the (I believe) penultimate video in his multi-year Ultima series. "This one was a doozy," he wrote in the comments. It's Ultima Online.

"From its unlikely formation at the behest of Richard Garriott and Starr Long, to its tempering at the hands of Raph Koster and his team of Multi-User Dungeon enthusiasts, to its changing identity in the face of competition, to its incalculable influence, this is the story of Ultima Online," the description reads. If you get the Ultima Online bug after watching the documentary, good news: it's still very much playable on both official servers and fan ones. Majuular highlighted the server he played on, In Mani Ylem, which aims to recapture the late '90s experience.

You can find the entire video series in a playlist here, and I can't recommend watching them highly enough. In late 2025 we published a feature story about Majuular's quest to chronicle the making of Richard Garriott's genre-defining series, and how that mission unexpectedly catapulted him to YouTube success with more than 200,000 followers. It's a good read—and won't take you quite as long as watching all the videos.

'A good idea, infinite drive, and lots of Diet Pepsi': How YouTube essayist Majuular's life changed course telling the story of Ultima across 2 years and more than 20 hours of documentaries

The Majuular Ultima Retrospective embodies the fastidious, affectionate critique that is gaming YouTube at its best. Many are multi-hour features that trace Ultima's burgeoning influence on both western and Japanese roleplaying games, discuss the human stories and context around its creation, and actually involve the dirty work of playing the games while analyzing Ultima's lore on its own terms.

GTA 6 is Game Informer’s Next Cover Story, New Details and Screenshots to be Revealed

It’s nice to know that some things never change, and that Game Informer is bringing GTA 6 to the cover of its next issue. Of course, that means a juicy cover story that’s slated to bring a lot of new information to the table.

The publication has promised 12 new screenshots to look forward to, and we’re sure it’ll be a carefully curated collection likely to ignite a frenzy of fresh speculation. Which is exciting enough, but we’re equally interested in exclusive interviews with the team, and to learn more about how Vice City and Leonidas were built alongside the dynamic weather systems, flora and fauna you’re likely to find, and how Miami and Florida proved to be great reference points for this one’s unique vibe. It’s all stuff we’ve been wanting to learn more about anyway, so it’s a win-win.

That’s a lot of information to take in at once, but we’re sure everyone shares our enthusiasm about what to expect from the latest GTA title. We’re hoping there’s a little bit about how music’s going to be woven into the gameplay, since that’s something we’re absolutely stoked about since that soundtrack announcement.

Grand Theft Auto 6 launches on November 19th for Xbox Series X/S and PS5.
