Alien Isolation 2 uses Unreal Engine 5 instead of Creative Assembly's custom engine, and fans are starting to worry: "This completely ruins any enthusiasm I have for the game"

We don't know much about Alien: Isolation 2 - there isn't even an official title yet - but it's been confirmed that the sequel is being built on another engine. Specifically, Unreal Engine 5, and this has raised a number of questions and concerns about the follow-up from Creative Assembly.

The studio's own website gave it away in job listings for the Xenomorph-filled project. "This is an excellent opportunity for a talented senior development manager to join the sequel to Alien: Isolation being built in Unreal Engine 5 (UE5)," reads a post on the company's site.

No further information is given on the game's status. This a marked change in direction, as the original was made using the Cathode Engine, a bespoke framework created for Alien: Isolation. Since that's the only game it was ever used on, there was perhaps a belief that Creative Assembly might maintain using it for a second installment.

That's not the case, and despite it being very early days on the sequel, this has sparked some worries among fans. Alien: Isolation stands out for the level of atmosphere and tension maintained throughout. The Xenomorph AI combined with the shadowy layout of the Sevastopol, which was very in line with the lived-in vibes of the Nostromo, made for a riveting, albeit terrifying, recreation of the spirit of Ridley Scott's classic film.

Switching engines could result in a different feel and texture, and fans are already bracing themselves for the change – and potential performance issues. "Welp, I'm not holding any hopes for the stability of the game," says one response on Twitter. "This completely ruins any enthusiasm I have for the game," says another.

The first proper teaser went live this past Alien Day, on April 26, providing a brief look at what might be an off-world colony, followed by one of the phones you'd use to save the game in Isolation. In the spirit of optimism, let it be known we're still months if not years away from playing this, and Creative Assembly is still the team constructing the terror. And, yes, there are plenty of good, stable Unreal Engine 5 games. Maybe let the devs cook.

Until Dawn dev's new sci-fi horror builds on Alien and The Thing's coworker paranoia: "It's a different, more mature way of viewing relationships"

An under-the-radar horror show that's set to end after 5 seasons has just been rated as one of the best shows of the decade on Rotten Tomatoes

From season 4 has debuted to a perfect 100% Rotten Tomatoes score, making it one of the best-rated shows of the decade, with each season receiving a score over 90%.

The MGM Plus show stars Harold Perrineau (Yes, Mercutio from Baz Luhrmann's Romeo and Juliet!) as Boyd Stevens, the sheriff of a small town in America that traps anyone who enters... and the unwilling residents are left to fight off nightmarish creatures as they desperately search to find a way out.

Season 1 holds a 96%, with season 2 at 93%, and season 3 at 100%. Season 4 premiered on April 19, with MGM Plus swiftly renewing it for a fifth and final season. Created by John Griffin (who guest-starred on MGM Plus horror original The Institute), the cast includes Catalina Sandino Moreno, Eion Bailey, David Alpay, Elizabeth Saunders, Scott McCord, Ricky He, and Chloe Van Landschoot.

"This season, the hunter has turned the key just a little and heat up just a little bit more," Perrineau told Inverse, when asked about the highly-rated fourth season. “They are maybe the most evil hunter you have ever experienced. And that is the town itself."

Horror legend Stephen King has previously spoken out about the show, agreeing with a fan that From is one of the most "criminally underrated horror shows of the decade." The series has been nominated for numerous Saturn Awards, bringing home the award for Best Horror Television show in 2025.

Valve's new Steam Controller launches May 4 at $99, and it will be a zoo without pre-orders

The updated Steam Controller from Valve costs $99 and will be released on Monday, May 4, the company announced today. This Monday is looking to be a busy one, as pre-orders have not opened and Valve says the controller won't be available for purchase at all until launch day.

The updated Steam Controller product page confirms the $99 price point. It's a clean $99.00, for the record, not $99.99. Valve seems eager to avoid the dreaded third digit in $100. PC Gamer reports that the price converts to €99 for the EU, £85 for the UK, and $149 in Australian and Canadian dollars.

In a blog post, the Steam hardware team advises you save this product page "for when purchasing opens," which will seemingly be May 4. With no pre-orders, getting a hold of a Steam Controller come launch day is likely to be a Steam-crashing zoo. At least Valve is seemingly sitting on a big stockpile.

Valve highlights the Steam Controller's features across a few breakdowns. Here are the key points:

  • Magnetic thumbsticks resistant to drift
  • 4x haptic motors for rumble feedback
  • 8.29Wh battery promising "35+ hours of gameplay on a single charge"
  • Steam Controller Puck provides "plug-and-play low-latency wireless connection & easy magnetic charging"
  • Two "highly precise and customizable" trackpads for mouse controls
  • Grip Sense "that uses capacitive touch sensors to sense if you're holding the handles" and which can also be used "like any other button." Valve says "we love using it to pull up menus, weapon wheels, and even pause the game when you put the controller down."
  • Four grip buttons which can be custom mapped. Valve says, "They are most especially useful when mapped to ABXY: you never have to move your thumb off the right stick or trackpad, allowing you to maintain precision at all times."

The Steam Machine, meanwhile, is nowhere to be seen. Production issues and pricing uncertainty surround Valve's not-console, with the company even jokingly pleading for "a line on a bunch of RAM" in today's fraught market. At least we've got the controller?

The Steam Controller may yet join our best PC controller for gaming list.
