A new trailer for the Dune: Prophecy series just dropped

A new trailer dropped on the opening day of the New York Comic Con for the new six-episode spinoff series Dune: Prophecy, a prequel to the recent films directed by Denis Villeneuve.

The new series will premiere November 17 at 9PM on HBO. Each episode will be available to stream on Max on Sundays following its TV broadcast.

The Dune prequel is based on the novel Sisterhood of Dune by Kevin J. Anderson and Brian Herbert, the son of Dune creator and science fiction writer Frank Herbert. The new HBO series takes place 10,000 years before the rise of Paul Atreides when the Bene Gesserit begins its ascension to power.

It tells the story of two Harkonnen sisters Valya and Tula, played by Emily Watson and Olivia Williams, who create the sisterhood that will inevitably become the Bene Gesserit, the social, spiritual and political order of powerful women seeking to control and shape the universe. Other members of the cast include Travis Fimmel, Jodhi May and Mark Strong.

God of War TV Series is Reportedly Restarting Development from Scratch

A TV series based on God of War was officially greenlit by Sony and Amazon Prime back in 2022, and as recently as earlier this year, it was confirmed that the show was in the writing stage. It seems, however, that things haven’t progressed exactly the way Prime and Sony wanted, with the series set to restart development from scratch.

That’s as per a Deadline report, which claims that showrunner Rafe Judkins (The Wheel of Time) and executive producers Hawk Ostby and Mark Fergus (The Expanse) have all left the project. The trio had reportedly finished multiple scripts for the show’s first season, and the scripts had received praise from Sony and Prime.

The studios are nonetheless choosing to take a different creative direction with the series, and are, as such, looking to hire an entirely new writing room. What that new direction will be remains to be seen. Meanwhile, SIE Santa Monica Studio’s Cory Barlog and Yumi Yang will both still continue to serve as executive producers on the show.

Hacker accused of manipulating Bitcoin prices with a fake SEC tweet was arrested after allegedly searching 'what are some signs the FBI is after you'

On January 9, 2024, a now-deleted tweet from @SECGov, the X account of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, declared that the SEC had granted "approval for Bitcoin ETFs for listing on all registered national securities exchanges," causing the price of Bitcoin to jump by more than $1,000. The SEC, however, had done no such thing. As SEC Chair Gary Gensler tweeted minutes later, the SEC's X account had been hacked; the fraudulent tweet was posted as part of a scheme to manipulate Bitcoin prices.

The hacker responsible for that scheme, according to the FBI, is Eric Council Jr., a 25-year-old Alabama man who was arrested earlier today under allegations of working with co-conspirators to take unauthorized control of the SEC X account with a SIM swap (via The Verge).

According to the indictment filings, Council—aka "Ronin," aka "AGiantSchnauzer," aka "@Easymunny"—allegedly worked alongside other hackers to gain access to the personal information of a federal employee with access to the @SECGov account. Council then used his convenient ID card printer—something only upstanding citizens have in their homes—to print an ID card pairing his face with the federal employee's personal info.

The indictment says that, fraudulent ID in hand, Council went to an AT&T branch where he managed to obtain a SIM card linked to the victim's phone number, allowing him to initiate the account recovery procedures for the victim's social media accounts. With those 2FA recovery codes now being sent to Council's SIM-swapped phone, he was able to access the @SECGov account and tweet a false announcement to juice Bitcoin prices.

In other words, Council allegedly committed like, four other crimes before things had even reached the "tweeting to manipulate markets under the guise of the federal agency meant to prevent market manipulation" stage. If I was running Bitcoin scams at 25 years old, I would maybe have set my sights a little lower than the US federal government, but I guess I don't have @Easymunny's edge.

What's particularly delightful about Council's accused misdeeds is what he got up to after the SEC hack went down. After returning the iPhone he'd allegedly bought for the sole purpose of SIM-swapping (instead of throwing it into a lake like any sensible person would), the indictment says Council started searching terms related to the hack, including:

  • "SECGOV hack"
  • "telegram sim swap"
  • "how can I know for sure if I am being investigated by the FBI"
  • "What are the signs that you are under investigation by law enforcement or the FBI even if you have not been contacted by them"
  • "what are some signs that the FBI is after you"
  • "Verizon store list"
  • "federal identity theft statute"
  • "how long does it take to delete telegram account"

It's unclear whether these alleged searches contributed directly to Council's eventual arrest, but if you're considering searching "am I about to be entirely hoisted by the crime I may or may not have committed," I would advise against it. If you have to ask, you probably won't like the answer.

Also, you don't need to phrase your Google searches like questions. It's fine.

HBO Prequel Series Dune: Prophecy Gets a Trailer and Release Date | NYCC 2024

Hang on to your stillsuits, the new trailer for HBO's Dune: Prophecy just dropped during the NYCC panel, along with a release date of November 17.

The show is a prequel to the events of the movies, set 10,000 years before the ascension of Paul Atreides and with showrunner and executive producer Alison Schapker telling the story of sisters from the House of Harkonnen and the birth of the sect that becomes the Bene Gesserit. A previous trailer told us: "The more influence our sisterhood gains, the more enemies we make."

During the panel it was revealed that spice plays an integral part in the world of Dune even at that point in the timeline and that dysfunctional family proved a key theme for the story. Schapker added the show focuses on "how power operates in the light and how power operates in the shadows. It can highlight some questions about power we have today.

"Expect a real look at the Bene Gesserit and a look behind the mystique. We certainly don't want to take away their mystique, but we do want to go behind closed doors and see how they operate."

The cast boasts Emily Watson (Chernobyl, Red Dragon) and Olivia WIlliams (The Crown, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power) alongside rising stars like Jessica Barden (The End of the F***ing World) and Chloe Lea (Foundation). Australian actor Josh Heuston will appear as Constantine, so of the emperor with Vikings star Travis Fimmel as Desmond, a soldier with a mysterious past.

The show has hit a few bumps during development with a tweak to the title, changing from Dune: The Sisterhood to Dune: Prophecy, and changes to the cast and the director.

Director Denis Villeneuve is confirmed to be working on a third Dune movie, but with no official title or release date as yet, Dune: Prophecy could tide fans over until they get more Muad'dib.
