God of War Laufey's Faye allowed Sony Santa Monica to merge the series' old and new eras: "Can I have chocolate and peanut butter together?"

In many respects, God of War Laufey is merging the series' old and new games, its Norse and Greek eras, and it's in large part thanks to the game's new protagonist Faye, according to game director and long-time God of War developer Ariel Lawrence.

While speaking to GamesRadar+ about the upcoming PS5 game, Lawrence touched on how Faye's new move set allowed Sony Santa Monica to play around with the original trilogy's more mobile and aerial combat, while still holding on to the newer game's more serious tone.

"I mean, I definitely cut my teeth on the first God of War," Lawrence says, pointing to how much she loved the original games' "pick up and play aspect." Juggling enemies, chaining combos, and having dynamic movement options "was always something that I love doing," she adds.

But Lawrence is also a fan of God of War (2018) and GOd of War Ragnarok's "more kind of grounded, visceral, just really up close combat," as many people are. "I like both of those things, so it's really one of those, 'Can I have chocolate and peanut butter together, right?'"

When it came to choosing a protagonist that can effectively fuse together the series' stylish roots and newer, grounded tone, Lawrence had a few questions. "What does it look like for those things to come together, and who can do that the best for us? And, you know, offer that agility, that flexibility, but still, you know, stand toe to toe with who we need to?" Faye was the eventually the answer.

God of War Laufey director says there's "definitely" some "long-term potential" in bumping into the many gods that Kratos has butchered

Tabletop Tavern transforms Total War's tactical skirmishes into a fast-paced indie roguelike

Tabletop Tavern embraces the tactical skirmishes of the Total War series and places them in a much more approachable setting. Tossing out the idea of grand, bloated campaigns, it instead dots battle after battle through a familiar roguelike structure, akin to that of Slay the Spire 2 or Into the Breach. If you've got a hankering for some fantasy strategizing in a more bite-size format, solo indie dev 'TJ' is here to answer the call. Out now, with an introductory sale and a free demo, Tabletop Tavern has already won my heart, and its creator is plotting more additions and multiplayer for the future.

Fallout 76's pets can finally come on your adventures, and they're completely safe - for now

A new Fallout 76 update has hit the Public Test Server, and it's one we've been waiting for basically since the survival game first launched. Animal companions have long been a core part of the Fallout series, but they've always been absent from F76 - sure, you do get real players joining you on your adventures, but they're not quite as cool. After much teasing, your Fallout 76 camp pets (themselves a relatively recent addition) can now come along on your journeys across the Appalachian Wasteland, and judging by the menus, it's just the start of what we can look forward to.
