Brandon Sanderson Is Done With the Mistborn Screenplay, but Says 'There Are Many Drafts to Come'

Brandon Sanderson announced two weeks ago that he had officially finished the Mistborn screenplay. He mentioned at the time that it is only a first draft, and he expects it's only the first step in a long process.

Sanderson has been moving at a seemingly breakneck pace on the project, which was only announced back in February of this year. Now that his first draft is done, progress will likely slow down significantly as he gathers feedback from editors and the folks over at Apple TV.

During this week's update on his YouTube channel, Sanderson echoed pretty much the same thing again, saying: "I'm still going to be gathering a lot of feedback on that. So, there are many drafts to come." This would indicate that there likely hasn't been much progress made on feedback and it could be a while until he starts working on a second draft. As he's continually said in past updates, "There's still a lot of work to do."

While we may not be getting the first Mistborn movie any time soon, Sanderson has followed up the update by saying he's finally "turning his attention back to Ghost Bloods." The author had previously mentioned that he planned on returning to the book after "spending a lot of time on Hollywood." Ghostbloods is going to be the first book in Mistborn Era 3 and will supposedly be taking place much later on the Cosmere timeline.

Ghostbloods isn't due to be released until 2028, but in the meantime, Sanderson will be launching the next series in his Cytoverse universe on September 1. The series will be called Rift Wake, and will be taking place in the same timeline as his popular Skyward series.

Sanderson announced back in May that his Skyward series would be officially getting a TV adaptation from the same studio that created the One Piece live-action show. There has yet to be any sort of streaming service attached to the project, but with the launch of the Rift Wake series, it's clear Sanderson is looking to turn his popular YA series into something similar to The Cosmere.
