Halo: Campaign Evolved is coming to PS5 because the FPS is "best played when we have a large, healthy community" say lead devs: "We're able to honor the Halo legacy on PlayStation"

Just as Sonic the Hedgehog eventually found his way onto Nintendo hardware, Master Chief is about to make the leap onto PlayStation with Halo: Campaign Evolved, a top-down remake of the classic FPS. Putting the face of Xbox on PS5 is a bold move, but it's one made with the idea of further unifying fans of the franchise, and ushering in a new era.

In an exclusive interview with GamesRadar+, two leads from Halo Studios (the renamed 343 Industries) explain exactly why it made sense to release this iteration of the iconic shooter on a Sony machine. "We hope to bring along the series veterans who have been with us for the past 25 years on the Xbox and PC platforms, and have them be able to play with this entirely new generation," Damon Conn, executive producer on Halo: Campaign Evolved, tells us.

"Maybe [it's] people who have never been exposed to Halo, because they've always been on Sony products," he continues, "or maybe they just missed it, or maybe they switched consoles at a certain point, and they want to kind of come back together."

He, rightly, notes that "the original is a masterpiece," and the team's goal isn't to make a replacement, but something that sits alongside Combat Evolved. There are some tweaks and quality-of-life improvements, like four-player cross-platform co-op, allowing people to enjoy the narrative together regardless of their system.

"Halo is really, you know, best played when we have a large, healthy community," Max Szlagor, creative director on Campaign Evolved, says. "We're able to honor the Halo legacy on PlayStation," Conn adds. "It's just paving the way to expand our Halo universe, that's how we see it."

Halo: Campaign Evolved comes almost five years since the last new entry, Halo Infinite, in 2021. In that time, Paramount's ill-fated Halo TV show is the only substantive release that we've seen, but there are apparently multiple games in the pipeline. If all goes well, there'll be plenty more Spartans ready to enjoy them after this comes out.

Game Pass Is Getting More Games In January And February 2026, Including Death Stranding

Arriving soon

Microsoft has revealed the next wave of titles coming to the Xbox Game Pass library for the rest of this month and rolling into February. Death Stranding: Director's Cut kicks things off, becoming available on the subscription service tomorrow, January 21. That's not the only critically acclaimed game arriving in the next 24 hours, either, with Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound also landing at the same time.

Those two titles join eight other games on the way for Game Pass over the next two weeks. Other eye-worthy additions include a couple of sequels: The Talos Principle 2 (January 27) and Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 (January 29). The former features brilliant puzzles, while the latter boasts one of the best boss fights of 2024.

Game Pass started the year with a sizable infusion of new titles, such as Star Wars Outlaws. As a reminder, Resident Evil Village and Mio: Memories in Orbit just became available for the service today.

However, there is always some attrition whenever Microsoft adds new titles to Game Pass. There are seven games leaving the service soon, like Lonely Mountains: Snow Riders and Citizen Sleeper 2: Starward Vector.

Tech creator makes console gaming Megazord, squeezing a PS5, Xbox Series S, and Nintendo Switch 2 inside a homemade cooling array

Before joining the PC Gamer team, I spent many years as a console gamer—shocking, I know. Though I have a Steam backlog many would envy, I'm still hopping between my rig and perhaps far too many consoles. What's a gamer to do? Crack each of those bad boys open and form something like a console Megazord? Well, one Chinese modder has basically done just that.

Hong Kong-based tech creator 小宁子 XNZ has built a 3-in-1 console that swaps between a PS5, Xbox Series S, and a Switch 2 at the push of a button (via TechSpot). It's a project vaguely reminiscent of Origin PC's The Big O, a liquid-cooled desktop with either a PS4 Pro or an Xbox One S console tucked inside, back in 2020. The creator calls her 3-in-1 effort the 'Ningtendo PXBOX 5,' and it turns out this hunk of hardware was no easy thing to create.

Rather than simply strapping all of the hardware together (which the YouTuber demonstrates would be both unwieldy and weigh a hefty 10 kg), she stripped everything down to its electrical components and completely rethought the hardware's housing. Don't worry, no motherboards were folded 'like a book' or otherwise harmed during this project.

Noticing that individual PSUs and cooling components take up an awful lot of space, the tech creator's first decision for her project was figuring out which components the consoles could share. Taking inspiration from the 2013 Mac Pro's 'trash can' design, 小宁子 XNZ set to work on designing a triangular cooling array with an exhaust at the top to regulate the temperature of all three consoles at once.

Actually making such a bespoke bit of kit proved an adventure in itself, though. After 3D printing her preliminary design for the cooler, 小宁子 XNZ found that relying on an outsourced manufacturing service to CNC machine her work in aluminium would be both a lengthy and costly process—so she decided to do it herself.

Seeking the time and space to iterate on her design, the tech creator chose to use an aluminium casting method not unlike lost-wax casting. Realising that, like wax, the PLA filament often used in 3D printing also has a low-ish melting point, she encased her cooler design inside a cast of gypsum. This version of the cooler is 3D printed with an extra channel for the creator to pour in molten aluminium. After a kind of chunky first attempt, the creator tweaked the design of the cooler's fins and tried again.

With a more successful later attempt coming out like 'a lotus flower emerging from water,' 小宁子 XNZ polished the aluminium chassis before attaching copper blocks to it for even better thermal regulation. For a spot of testing in Elden Ring, she strapped just the PS5's electrical hardware and a 12 cm cooling fan to the copper-aluminium-combo cooler. The console is shown to not only switch on in this bare bones state, but also doesn't exceed 60 °C over 30 minutes of gameplay.

The final 3-in-1 console runs off a single 250 W PC power supply, and even incorporates a push-button mechanism that allows the Switch 2 console to be ejected like a slice of funky, chunky poptart from a toaster. The actual console switching mechanism is accessed via a triangular button on top of the 'Ningtendo PXBOX 5,' with an Arduino-based control board handling the HDMI output and ensuring only one console is powered on at a time.

While multiple consoles can be in standby mode, it sounds like game switching on the Xbox isn't really supported by this setup. However, 小宁子 XNZ's video also demonstrates that hopping between consoles takes less than five seconds.

Black walnut panelling and an LED light strip that glows either blue, red, or green depending on the active console are among the finishing touches. Looking not unlike a hefty white chocolate Toblerone, the resulting 3-in-1 console is undeniably still bulky—though 小宁子 XNZ says she 'thinks it looks better than the PS5.'

Though I do have a bit of a soft spot for Sony's funky white box, the Ningtendo PXBOX 5 remains an incredibly impressive project. While I'm not sure the whole thing saves that much space in the end, I am also writing this from a rig that has a lot of the same games and arguably takes up even more room…

'I Have Some Unfinished Business There' — Luke Cage Star Mike Colter Teases 'Conversations' Around Return

Mike Colter has given a promising update on the likelihood he'll return as Marvel's unbreakable Harlem hero Luke Cage.

Speaking on Shawn Stockman's On That Note podcast, Colter was asked if there was any chance fans might see him back in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, eight years on from Netflix's controversial cancellation of its Luke Cage series and other popular superhero shows.

Without committing to anything concrete, Colter said that "conversations" had indeed taken place about him coming back as Cage and that the results of these chats could "come into fruition faster than we think."

"Listen, I will say this, I've had conversations... and I'll leave it at that," Colter said.

"I've had conversations," he continued, "which before, I was... 'no.' Because when it wrapped... y'know I loved playing Luke Cage but I love acting and doing different things. So I just was like, 'I'll do something else.' I love the fans and I love that world. And it's been years now. So now, I'm doing other projects, but now I think to myself 'I have some unfinished business there.'

"I talked to Cheo [Hodari Coker] about it, he was the creator and showrunner [on Netflix's Luke Cage series], and now I've reached the point where I'm like, 'I have some unfinished business' and I think Daredevil's back so, c'mon... Jessica's back."

The most obvious place for Colter to return would be in a future episode of Daredevil: Born Again. Fellow Netflix-era star Charlie Cox has already filmed the second season of his Disney+ revival series — which will notably also see the return of Krysten Ritter as Jessica Jones, another alumna of Marvel's Netflix era.

Indeed, Colter began his turn as Cage on Netflix's Jessica Jones series, appearing as a regular character during its first season before starring in two seasons of his own show. Colter also appeared in Netflix crossover miniseries The Defenders, which saw him team up with characters from Daredevil, Jessica Jones, and Iron Fist.

Fans have remained keen to see what Cage is up to now, and with Jessica Jones returning in Daredevil Season 2, there are hopes that Mike Colter's character will be given a similar return in Disney's already-greenlit third season that will be filmed this year.

"I'd say we're in a better position to come into fruition faster than we think, so we'll see," Colter teased. "I was giving no one hope before, I am giving hope at least."

IGN previously spoke with Daredevil: Born Again writer Jesse Wigutow on how the series is now embracing its star's Netflix-era roots, after an initial attempt at keeping the show separate. "I feel like some of that worked well, and some of it didn't," Wigutow said. "There were expectations that weren't necessarily being met, and there was a pointed effort and a left turn — to not necessarily return to Netflix, but honor the Netflix origin of the show. It is meant to be more aligned with the Netflix show now."
