'Our world is like a theme park': Fallout 76's latest expansion into the mysterious Ohio has proven to be its best move yet

Burning Springs is the latest expansion in Fallout 76, and this time the map has been expanded sideways (to the Northwest, to be specific). And even though the new map is just a jump, skip, and a hop over the river, it's an entirely different vibe.

"The way Jon Rush (creative director) likes to describe it is, our world is like a theme park," lead producer, Bill LaCoste, tells me. "So every area has a defined theme, and we didn't have anything that was very close to that desert kind of Wasteland. So this just made perfect sense for the region that we'd be expanding into, and the reasons why the region is that way. It really fit well with what we had."

This new area of the Wasteland is indeed inspired by the sandy slopes of Fallout: New Vegas and Fallout 3, with the pillars being "desert, deathclaws, and raiders", which also coincidentally ties in with Fallout season 2 on Prime.

"We set this up in a way so this new area goes along with the show a little bit," LaCoste says. "We just wanted to expand in a different direction, you know. And also, I think part of the mystery and mystique behind Ohio is that there's only a handful of references to Ohio in all of the Fallout Lore. There aren't very many, and so that was part of the intrigue."

But before I could even begin to explore any of the sandy dunes, I was cornered into fighting in the Rust King's arena. Kidnapped after trying to help a fake person in need (this is what I get for being nice), I was left in a cage to choose an ally out of two other prisoners: One being slightly more chatty but a little snakey, and the other not wanting anything to do with me.

I can't actually remember who I picked as a partner, but in the end, it didn't matter because they both ended up dying in the arena—I didn't actually think I'd need to babysit them, plus I had a deathclaw on my back as if that wasn't enough to deal with.

After impressing the Rust King with my sick axe moves (I died twice), I was let free, able to roam this new side of the Wasteland, and I can confirm, it's very sandy. "We've said all along, you know, the main character of this game is Appalachia and the surrounding areas now," LaCoste says. "The new areas that we create, the stories that we tell through that environment are really important to our game, and that's what we've continued to do here, even with Burning Springs."

Dotted across the barren land are places of interest like the Ghouls' temporary home in Highway Town, the Starlight Drive-in, or LaCoste's favourite spot, Athens.

"I love what we've done with Athens," LaCoste says. "I wanted to give a real big shout-out to our level design team and environment team for what they did with Athens. It's just such an amazing space to really investigate and run around in. And it just looks great. I mean, all the places of interest look really great—they all have such a distinct look to them as well.

"There's a lot of barren Wasteland in between the points of interest along there. But that was purposeful. Every time you run across something new, there is always something to explore, something to investigate, something to check out. We've done a really good job here of creating an environment that's got a lot of story to it just on its own."

I spent most of my time running across Ohio, venturing from one grunt hunt to another, mostly because Walton Goggins told me to. But this led me to see a whole lot more of the map faster than I usually would.

But it also dropped me in some not-so-safe places. Be warned, Dino Peaks mini golf will lure you in with statues of Brontosaurus or Triceratops, but there's evil in the mud. "The armoured deathclaws now are also a little bit more intimidating, for sure, especially if you go to Dino Peaks mini golf," LaCoste says. "When you pop in there, sometimes you can see three or four deathclaws come out of the ground. You're like, oh, no, I might be in trouble here. But it's a lot of fun." Fun wasn't the first word that came to my mind as I got chased halfway across Ohio by a pack of aggravated deathclaws, but sure, why not?

Holy Moly, Xbox Made A Whole Bunch Of Games Free To Play Right Now

Today marks the beginning of Xbox's Free Play Days, which temporarily gives Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, Premium, and Essential subscribers access to a handful of this year's hits as well as a few older titles.

There are two exceptions, however. Parts of Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 are available for all players until December 22, whether you have Game Pass or not. Similarly, Fallout 76 is free for everyone through December 23, and you don't need Game Pass to enjoy it.

Some of the other games in this year's lineup include NBA 2K26, WWE 2K25, and PGA Tour 2K25. Two of the older titles featured are Ark: Survival Ascended and The Forgotten City, the latter of which is available on both console and PC.

To get access to these titles, you will need to visit the Microsoft Store while signed into your account. If you already have a Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, Premium, or Essential membership, then all you need to do is click on the Subscriptions tab in the Xbox Store. All of the games will be listed under the Free Play Days collection for both Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S.

If you decide you want to keep the games and any Achievements you've earned while playing them, these titles will be getting a limited-time discount.

All of this year's Xbox Free Play Days games are listed below, and the event will run until Sunday, December 21.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 7

You won't need to be a Game Pass subscriber to check out Call of Duty: Black Ops 7. This is one of the two titles that fall under the Free Play Days For All banner.

From December 16-22, players can check out a limited selection of Black Ops 7's Multiplayer and Zombies content, as well as the remastered Nuketown 2025 map.

In a nod to the holiday season, Black Ops 7 is celebrating CODMAS with the Sleighjacked MP Map that has festive-themed decorations.

Fallout 76

Fallout 76 is the second and final game under the Free Play Days For All classification. From now until December 23, players can explore the game for free.

The latest expansion, Burning Springs, is included as well, and it features Walton Goggins reprising his role as the Ghoul from the Prime Video Fallout TV series.

NBA 2K26

A Game Pass membership is required to play NBA 2K26 during the Free Play Days, as well as all of the other games below it on this list.

This game includes a new MyCareer storyline on current-gen consoles and online play to challenge other players.

WWE 2K25

WWE 2K25 is only available though the weekend for Free Play Days. However, 2K Games is offering fans some incentive to stick around for Xbox players in the US and Canada.

Anyone who purchases WWE 2K25 between now and January 7 will get a $5 Xbox gift card as well as 15,000 VC Pack.

PGA Tour 2K25

If you're looking for a little less action, PGA Tour 2K25 lets players work on their swing while rising through the MyCareer and MyPlayer mode. Multiplayer modes are also available.

Beyond Free Play Days, PGA Tour 2K25 is offering fans 12 days of daily free rewards.

Ark: Survival Ascended

Ark: Survival Ascended is one of two Xbox Play Anywhere games that are part of this year's Free Play Days.

This game drops players into an enigmatic island where futuristic technology exists side-by-side with dinosaurs. If you want to live in this world, you'll have to master both.

The Forgotten City

The Forgotten City also supports Xbox Play Anywhere. This title is an adventure that sends players to an underground city that lies in ruins in the present. But after discovering a portal to the past, players can see what the city was like when the people there were still alive.

Whether they stay that way will depend on the choices made by the player.
