Mass Effect veteran's Mass Effect-style sci-fi RPG sure looks a lot like Mass Effect in its new trailer

Exodus, the upcoming sci-fi RPG from Mass Effect and Baldur's Gate veterans, is taking another major step towards full 'spiritual successor' status.

In its new trailer at The Game Awards, we got the longest look yet at Exodus' gameplay. While developer Archetype has done an awful lot to build out its universe - with everything from novels to a tabletop roleplaying game - it's not shown off much in the way of how the game actually plays.

As it turns out, the way it actually plays looks a lot like Mass Effect, though perhaps that's not too shocking with BioWare veterans Chad Robertson and James Ohlen helping lead Exodus. There's cover shooting, companions, and even some mystical abilities that make traversal look particularly exciting. A decent chunk of the trailer is given over to cutscenes, admittedly, but there's certainly a good amount of footage to go off.

There's also a lot of Matthew McConaughey, who's lending some extra gravitas to Exodus' Interstellar-style time dilation narrative by serving as the voice actor behind main character Jun's mentor figure. He's mostly voiceover, so we don't get a particularly substantial insight into his character, but that's made up for by Jun himself, whose hero's journey is a significant part of the trailer.

From sprawling in the mud of some backwater town to saving the world as the only person capable of wielding the Celestial technology that humanity now relies on, it's a pretty wild ride of an arc within a single trailer.

The companions appear in much of the trailer, once again riffing on Mass Effect. On each mission, you'll get to choose which two allies to take along with you, borrowing from their unique skill sets to decide on your approach.

That might mean a pair of stealth experts, tech geniuses, or simply those who prefer to go loud, but Archetype hasn't revealed all that much about how its cast will play out yet. What it has shown off is plenty of ensemble shots, suggesting that the downtime between characters might be just as important as the action itself.

There's a bittersweet sting at the end of the new Exodus trailer, which confirms a release date slip into early 2027. Initially planned for a 2026 release but with no more exact window than that, it's a shame that we're not getting hold of Exodus next year, but hopefully we're only looking at a real-time delay of a few months at most.

They're already responsible for many of the best RPG games on our list, but are Exodus' devs about to add another entry?

Larian's next RPG is a new Divinity, and it's "even larger than Baldur's Gate 3"

Baldur's Gate 3 studio and RPG royalty Larian has officially announced and revealed its next game: a new Divinity title.

Larian debuted its new RPG at The Game Awards 2025 with one of the more gruesome, unsettling trailers I've seen in recent memory. It starts by showing an emaciated, brutally tortured prisoner suspended by the wrists, before transitioning to a scene that initially looks a lot cheerier: some sort of celebration where people are eating, drinking, dancing... burning their prisoner alive.

Thankfully, it seems like the people with the fire did the right thing - as the burning guy's skin gives way to the flames, he drips acidic blood that spawns roots in the ground that turn into horrific, hissing flowers. Then, his back erupts like a volcano of blood that shoots into the sky. Definitely doesn't seem like a chill dude.

Anyway, no platforms or release date plans have been revealed, but the good news is that there's definitely a new Divinity happening, and it's been described by host Geoff Keighley as "even larger than Baldur's Gate 3" and Larian's "biggest game ever." Also, it's actually just called Divinity this time, it seems.

After 21 years, Knights of the Old Republic's original director is returning to the series for Fate of the Old Republic

I never would have guessed that we'd get Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 3 before Half-Life 3, but here we are. At The Game Awards 2025, we got a brief teaser trailer for Fate of the Old Republic, a follow-up to the original games whose development will be headed up by Casey Hudson, project lead on KotOR 1 and the Mass Effect trilogy.

The trailer shows a star ship—not the original games' Ebon Hawk—piloted to a remote, snowy world. Its pilot and passengers, which include a droid resembling the HK series from KotOR, emerge and approach a downed Sith capital ship from the Old Republic games.

There are any number of directions Hudson and co. could go with the story: KotOR 2 had a very vague, open-ending conclusion that has since been elaborated on in various bits and bobs of Star Wars lore crafting, most notably some of the expansions to the long-running Old Republic MMO, but that feels like the sort of stuff you can just treat as a suggestion.

Given the fact that The Old Republic takes place a good few thousand years after Knights, with another thousand and change at least before the movies after that, Saber has a fairly blank canvas to work on. At this point, more than resurrecting old characters and plotlines, there's a vibe to KotOR, an approach to Star Wars that embraces the mystery and antiquity of the galaxy that I'd love to see again.

Decrepit is a first-person horror Soulslike about escaping an undead castle, and it's even got FromSoftware icon Wheely Skeleton

Decrepit is a brand new first-person Soulslike that blends light roguelike elements to make each stab at its dungeon-crawling gameplay a fresh nightmare. Developed by one-man studio Jämmerdal Games and published by Three Friends, the promising new game just premiered at The Game Awards.

Here's a look at the reveal trailer:

According to its Steam page, Decrepit will take place in a "decaying, medieval prison" where you must fight your way out of a forsaken castle. As if the Dark Souls parallels weren't clear enough, you'll begin every run of Decrepit in a prison cell, though its location will be different every run.

"Memorize winding corridors, unlock elevators that stay active, and discover passages that shorten your route," the dev says. "Learn which threats might appear where. Early runs feel endless. Later, you're heading straight for the boss that stopped you last time. The castle compresses as you learn it."

The Souls comparisons don't stop there. Decrepit looks to feature stamina-based combat, gnarly looking undead foes (including a skeleton attached to a large wheel!), and some labyrinthine level design. Oh, and yes, you should absolutely expect challenging boss fights.

Decrepit is planned to release in 2026, but you can sign up for a playtest on Steam.

This story is developing.
