Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced uses the same engine as Shadows to offer "dynamic weather," "destructible objects," and way better water

As if it were traveling back and forth through the Animus, the upcoming remake Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced is actually using the engine that more contemporary games in the series were built on to upgrade the original pirate adventure's weather and vast ocean.

During a recent Reddit AMA with the developers of Black Flag Resynced, one fan wondered whether the technical chops we saw showcased in Assassin's Creed Shadows would creep into the remake, since both were built on Ubisoft's proprietary Anvil Engine.

Game director Richard Knight responds, "The Anvil Engine at the heart of Shadows is at the heart of Black Flag Resynced too, giving us access to everything from Raytracing and RTGI to better sound, dynamic weather, destructible objects and more."

Assassin's Creed Shadows was an undeniably gorgeous game, so there's no complaints here about porting some of its most immersive features into another title, but the remakers at Ubisoft are apparently going one step further by buffing the thing you'll spend most of your time staring at during voyages across the Caribbean: water.

"And specifically for Black Flag Resynced, the Anvil watertech team has been a critical part of the experience in giving us the best naval experience yet," Knight adds. That emphasis makes sense since, you know, as you might remember from Black Flag, when you're not actively surrounded by the ocean during epic ship fights or jolly, musical trips between colonies, you're probably on an island that's 90% beach.

New and improved tech isn't the only thing from recent Assassin's Creed games that Ubisoft's retroactively slotting into its 2013 pirate adventure. Developers have talked about how Black Flag Resynced will build on parkour features we saw in Shadows, but those who aren't fond of the series' newer RPG flavor shouldn't worry. Ubisoft distanced Black Flag Resynced's combat from the levels and stat checks seen in the series' mammoth RPGs.

Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced comes out July 9 on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S.

Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced isn't making the map any bigger, lead dev says, but it'll still take you longer to explore

New World of Warcraft Midnight update throws Hunters an essential lifeline, with Warriors and Shamans also on the rise

Blizzard has detailed its next World of Warcraft Midnight class tuning update, and it's throwing a bone to Marksmanship Hunters, who have been feeling rather sad following its patch 12.0.5 rework. The new WoW patch notes also bring good news for the likes of Shaman, Warrior, Warlock, and Paladin, but Augmentation Evoker, Guardian Druid, and Unholy Death Knight are all facing nerfs. There's also a pretty significant difficulty drop in store for the Alleria fight in the Mythic Voidspire raid, so I've picked out the most significant adjustments to watch out for in the MMORPG this week.

Hytale boss doesn't want its mod browser to feel like "a shopping mall," but is exploring ways to support creators

Hytale founder Simon Collins-Laflamme has addressed the thorny topic of paid mods for the up-and-coming sandbox game, aiming to strike a balance of supporting mod makers without a negative impact on the player experience. He lays out the current intention of Hypixel Studios, which is to keep mods featured in-game free to install with "no price tags in the browsing experience," while considering longer-term ways to allow people to support their favorite creators.

Saros feels like Returnal, but it's a very different game to Housemarque

Now, five years later, Housemarque has returned with a fair compromise. Sarosisn’t Returnal 2, but a totally new game. It is, however, a clear variation on a theme. It repeats virtually all of Returnal’s gameplay beats, but modifies them with a tweaked approach to defense and lots more opportunities for progression. In a video interview with Polygon, creative director Gregory Louden and associate design director Matti Häkli explained how Housemarque landed the tricky balancing act of giving players the experience they’re craving while still doing something new within a familiar framework. It all comes down to the finer details.

Space strategy game Sins of a Solar Empire 2 drops its gen-AI artwork amid a huge new UI overhaul

A massive new Sins of a Solar Empire 2 update makes wide-reaching changes across the entire space strategy game, but I'm most pleased by Stardock's decision to strip out the AI-generated art that was leaving an unpleasant taste on the rest of the experience. The huge 'UI Horizons' overhaul offers dramatic redesigns to the front-end menus, helping you better set up your next adventure. It also includes the much-requested return of an in-game map editor, modding improvements, improved enemy AI, and new defensive tools for all three factions.
